CORTEC now accuses Mining Secretary of demanding bribe. Balala dismisses claims by CORTEC.
The government has revoked licenses of mining companies that were awarded between January and may this year. This is to determine their nature and benefits to the country and host communities. Mining cabinet secretary Najib Balala revoked 31 mining licenses, saying they were issued under unclear circumstances. He consequently formed a seven-man team to assess the validity of each license, draft a recommendation and make a report that will inform the mining ministry's decision. Sally Mbilu reports.
Uganda's government is set to cancel over 170 mining licenses for companies that have failed to pay their royalties over concerns that redundant licenses are denying it a substantial amount in revenue. CCTV's Hillary Ayesiga reports.
Investors in the emerging mining sector have raised concern over a recent move by the government to revoke over 30 mining licenses issued during the first half of this year. The move that was announced by Mining Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala was meant to enable the government review the licenses with the governments claiming that the deals were struck with political undertones.
Government says its yet to institute the appropriate legal benchmarks on issuance of licensing for mineral exploration as speculators are still finding space in the sector. Peter Lokeris, the Minister of State for Mineral Development admits that the recent lifting of the ban on export of raw minerals, means reforms must equally be pushed to protect the mining sector. Prospective investors in the mining industry now have a new digital platform for processing all their requirements including licenses. The online portal is expected to reduce the duration it takes to acquire a mining license from 18 months to a maximum of three months. Mining Principal Secretary Patrick Omutia said that this will replace the old cumbersome paper based system.
Most of the mining licenses issued in the period between 2003 to 2013 were irregular while others do not exist in the state records according to a task force report released on Wednesday. Cabinet secretary for mining Najib Balala says he will use the report to clean up the sector.

The Ankara Prosecutor's Office has recently launched an investigation into two journalists from the Zaman daily, İsmail Altunsoy and columnist Turhan Bozkurt, on the grounds that they "insulted" a businessman in reporting on mining licenses being obtained faster by pro-government businessmen. The government has published the names of 43 companies whose mining licenses were revoked on Monday over alleged irregularities. The list released by the ministry of mining was made public even as it emerged that some of the companies owned by influential individuals had been given an unlimited scope to exploit and mine a wide range of minerals. Meanwhile, the Kenya chamber of mines has faulted the cancellation of licenses warning this was likely to deter prospective investors eyeing a piece of Kenya's mineral wealth.

Mining Ministry Launches Online Mining License Application Prospective investors in the mining sector will soon be able to apply for mining licenses online and receive a response within 90 days. This is one of the reform measures aimed at cutting out brokers and reduce corruption in the licensing processes. The proposal is among many others contained in the mining bill currently in its second reading in parliament. The bill advocates for creation of a mining advisory board to oversee and assess the online mining licence applications before final approvals are granted by the cabinet secretary for mining.
