Ethiopia has cancelled over 50 mining and exploration licenses over failure by licence holders to commence operations on schedule.The law requires a company to commence exploration or mining within 90 days after signing a contract with Ethiopia's ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Natural gas. The ministry had registered 530 mining companies. Statistics indicate that since 2004, a total of 211 mining licenses have been cancelled. Ethiopia is endowed with many natural resources, including gold, iron, natural gas and oil. Gold is among Ethiopia's major mineral exports. The long wait for mining companies to get exploration licenses in the country is about to come to an end. Mining Cabinet Secretary Dan Kazungu says in accordance with the mining act, a board has been constituted and it is only awaiting the appointment of its chair for it to start work, which will include issuing mining licenses. Since May 2016 no new license has been issued as the government works on replacing the 76 year old colonial law.
The government has revoked licenses of mining companies that were awarded between January and may this year. This is to determine their nature and benefits to the country and host communities. Mining cabinet secretary Najib Balala revoked 31 mining licenses, saying they were issued under unclear circumstances. He consequently formed a seven-man team to assess the validity of each license, draft a recommendation and make a report that will inform the mining ministry's decision. Sally Mbilu reports.

Entree Gold has received a mining license covering its Nomkhon Bohr coal discovery, outlined through exploration efforts in 2008-2009. The new mining license comprises approximately 14,030 hectares and covers the northwest corner of the former Togoot exploration license. The portion of the property included in the mining license is mainly underlain by Permian sediments which are known to host rich coal deposits in this part of the Gobi Desert.
Prospective investors in the mining industry now have a new digital platform for processing all their requirements including licenses. The online portal is expected to reduce the duration it takes to acquire a mining license from 18 months to a maximum of three months. Mining Principal Secretary Patrick Omutia said that this will replace the old cumbersome paper based system.

This is one of the reform measures aimed at cutting out brokers and reduce corruption in the licensing processes. The proposal is among many others contained in the mining bill currently in its second reading in parliament. The bill advocates for creation of a mining advisory board to oversee and assess the online mining licence applications before final approvals are granted by the cabinet secretary for mining.
Most of the mining licenses issued in the period between 2003 to 2013 were irregular while others do not exist in the state records according to a task force report released on Wednesday. Cabinet secretary for mining Najib Balala says he will use the report to clean up the sector.

A delay in the constitution of a Mineral Rights Board is holding back the issuance of mining licenses to investors who have already applied as per the new Mining Act 2016. This is according to Mining Cabinet Secretary Dan Kazungu who says the licenses can only be granted by the new body.

The government has published the names of 43 companies whose mining licenses were revoked on Monday over alleged irregularities. The list released by the ministry of mining was made public even as it emerged that some of the companies owned by influential individuals had been given an unlimited scope to exploit and mine a wide range of minerals. Meanwhile, the Kenya chamber of mines has faulted the cancellation of licenses warning this was likely to deter prospective investors eyeing a piece of Kenya's mineral wealth.
